Tues 12th to Fri 15th - Isafjordur
Tristy's birthday today. Happy Birthday, mate.
Today (Friday) we flew from Reykjavik to Isafjordur, in the very northwest of Iceland. The area is known as the Westfjords.
The plane was small, there were 9 rows, 4 seats to each row, and we were in Row 8! The airport was small, the baggage claim was small, in fact, our bags arrived in the terminal before we did!!! Hairy approach to the airport, mountain one side, fjord the other! If the weather is not perfect, the flights don't leave Reykjavik, because there is nowhere at Isafjordur airport to store the plane. We found this out as we waited to be picked up and taken to the airport on Thursday night. We kept being told that the flight hadn't left Reykjavik because of landing conditions in Isafjordur (presumably). Eventually, all was ok. Our 6.15pm flight arrived at 8pm, and we left at 8.15pm. More on that later.
Apparently, a shuttle bus meets each flight. This means he waits until the plane takes off again, then so does he. We knew none of this; we're looking for an information desk - ha ha - to see how we can get into town. Eventually, I asked the girl at the car rental window, and she told us about the shuttle. Too late for that. She rang the taxi for us, because the taxi phone in the terminal wasn't working!
Guess what? Made it to our hotel unscathed. Took our ports into the foyer. Where's Reception?? Some knowledgeable person staying at the hotel told us it was at the main hotel, across the road and down a bit!!! Hoping our luggage was safe in the foyer, we find the 'main hotel', check in, find out that this is where breakfast is served, and make our way back to our room. The concierge followed us on his bike to show us how the lift worked. You should have seen it; Pam and Judy wouldn't have gone within cooeee of it. 1. To call the lift to your floor, you hold the green button down until the lift stops; you then pull the door open. 2. You get into the lift, with your bags, select the floor you want to get out on, then hold down the green button again, and the lift will stop on your floor. If you stop holding down the green button, the lift will stop!!!!!! We used it to get our bags upstairs when we arrived, and downstairs when we left!!! Thank God, we were on the first floor!!!! Oh, by the way, the lift was a platform, no roof, you could see up to the top floor!!
We didn't need the key the first time we entered our room, because the cleaners were just leaving. Left our ports, went for a walk looking for the Information Centre (Cath was mapreading - she does that well!!), and booked a tour to some waterfall, and a Northern Lights tour, all with the same person. Back to the hotel, can't get into our room!!! No wonder we did 20,000+ steps that day, backwards and forwards between the bloody hotels!!!! New key worked!!!
This is a beautiful little town on a fjord, with just about everything within walking distance of everythng else.
Arriving at Isafjordur.
Some streets and houses in Isafjordur.
This was all before lunch on Friday - early start! More next time on our trip to the waterfall.
